We aggressively pursue proactive approaches to crime prevention, and boast a very high clearance rate on reported crimes. Message From the Chief

Welcome!  On behalf of the dedicated men and women of the Lacy Lakeview Police Department I would like to thank you for visiting our website.  We are a very proactive police department committed to being respectful, courteous, and professional to everyone we serve and protect.  Our core values are honor, integrity, and commitment.  While constantly seeking ways to improve upon the safety of our citizens, through technology and training, we strive to promote a strong transparent partnership with our community oriented style policing.  As your Chief of Police, I am humbled and honored to serve this community and this department.  I sincerely appreciate the support and confidence extended to me by the elected officials, the municipal management team, and residents of this city.  I consider it a great privilege to work with the members of the Lacy Lakeview Police Department as they provide quality service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I ask you to join me in thanking our dedicated workforce for what they have done in the past and by supporting them now and into the future.  Please feel free to contact me personally or any member of our team as we welcome your thoughts, ideas, and observations as we look forward to serving your needs.

Police Chief - John Truehitt

Chief Truehitt began his law enforcement career over twenty-five years ago with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After graduating from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Special Agent Truehitt was assigned to FBI field offices in Missoula, Montana, Lubbock, Texas, and the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport before being assigned to the FBI's Waco office in 1999. From 1999 until his retirement from the FBI, he was the Senior Resident Agent in charge of the FBI's Waco office. He also assisted the surrounding 13 counties and the Relief Supervisory Special Agent assisting in the supervision of all the FBI Special Agents and Task Force Officers (TFOs) investigating violent crime within 27 Central Texas counties. Chief Truehitt has extensive investigative and management experience in complex and sensitive high profile investigations including numerous violent bank robberies, kidnappings, child pornography, fraud, civil rights, national security, organized criminal activity and terrorism investigations.

Chief Truehitt was born in Waco but his family moved to the outskirts of Houston. Chief Truehitt graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University and previously taught vocational agriculture. He also previously worked for an oil field service company. Chief Truehitt also holds a Texas Peace Officer license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).

Chief Truehitt and his wife Barbara have been married for over 35 years and have 5 grown children and 8 grandchildren. John and Barbara enjoy spending quiet peaceful moments with their animals.

Register for the new Citizen Emergency Notification System!

The Emergency Notification System (ENS) selected by the Heart of Texas Council of Governments (HOTCOG) Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee to enhance preparedness and protect citizens in our six-county region is operational. ENS, a combination of a telephone database, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technologies, and an internet based activation system, delivers emergency notifications to citizens or emergency response groups via a phone system and the internet. The system has the ability not only to communicate via the phone, but by email, cell phone text message, and the TTY phone for the hearing impaired. The system was purchased from Emergency Management Telecommunications, Inc. (EMTEL) at a cost of approximately $120,000.

About the Police Department

Department Structure

The Police department is comprised of three basic Sections: Patrol, Investigations and Communications. The Patrol Section is supervised by a Lieutenant, and consists of two Sergeants, one Corporal, and eight officers. Patrol shifts are four 10-hour shifts, and three days off. Investigations consist of a Detective. And is supervised by a Lieutenant.

Drug Investigation

Drug Investigations are conducted by our officers and case investigations are supervised by the Patrol Lieutenant and Detective. The department is very pro-active on drug cases.

Support Services

Our civilian staff (known as Support Services) includes one animal control officer, who also serves as environmental officer, five full time dispatchers, a data entry clerk, and a section supervisor. There are also three part-time dispatchers. A CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system is utilized in the Communications Center.

The department offers several community based programs:

  • The RUOK system is a computer-based system that calls and checks on the welfare of our elderly or physically challenged individuals.
  • The Citizens Police Academy: this classroom-based program is offered to citizens at no cost to learn about the department, and covers several elements within the law enforcement field. This class is held each spring and has been very successful. For information, please call Lt. Jerry Gerick at ext. 216.
  • The Ride-Along program allows citizens to "ride" as an observer with a police officer during a designated shift. This allows the public to see, through their own eyes, a day in the life of a Lacy Lakeview Police Officer.
  • Victim's Surveys are sent to each victim of a crime. The department reviews the feedback provided to monitor the service that we provide.
