Community Haven
a program of the
McLennan County Youth Collaboration
Community Haven is a multifaceted project designed to serve Bellmead and LacyLakeview residents in both school districts and cities to help provide a way to collaborate resources and meet the needs of all concerned.
Services
Community Haven provides assistance in the following ways:
- After-school tutorial/mentoring programs are conducted at Connally Middle School & H.P.Miles
Middle School from 3:45-5:30pm Mon-Thurs. each week. LaVega High School meets from 3:30-4:30pm Mon-Thurs. Certifed teachers and Baylor volunteers direct the program aimed at reducing failures and dropouts.
- After-school character education classes are taught by licensed counselor at LaVega High School on Thurs. from 3:30-4:30pm and H.P.Miles Middle School from 3:45-5:15pm on Tues. each week Communities in Schools teaches this class as part of tutorial/mentoring program on Mon. & Wed. from 3:45-4:30pm each week at Connally Middle School.
- Establishment of local Family Practice Health Clinics within Connally & LaVega ISD. Connally Community Clinic is open 8:00am-5:00 pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday; LaVega Community Clinic is open 8:00am-5:00pm Tuesday and Thursday each week. These clinics offer a variety of services by nurse practitioners and accept Medicaid and other insurances.
- Construction of new homes in Bellmead and LacyLakeview utilizing ROTC high school students from both Connally and LaVega. This project gives students an opportunity to become involved in community service and to learn valuable skills for future employment as well as teamwork and cooperation.
Target Population
- Community Haven after-school tutorial/mentoring programs serve students in grades 6-12 in both school districts. Participation is voluntary and open to any students needing help or referred by teachers or counselors.
- Character education classes serve students in grades 6-12 in both school districts. Students can be referred by teachers or Communities in Schools or may participate voluntarily.
- Family Practice Clinics are open to all students and school personnel in both Connally and LaVega and focuses on all the residents of Bellmead and LacyLakeview, as well as all of Waco.
- Home construction is limited to the Bellmead and LacyLakeview communities. Homes are sold to any qualifying first-time home buyer.
